ALPFA Board of Directors Announces Appointment of First Student Director, 2015 Student of the Year, Josuel Plasencia
Since its founding in 1972, the pursuit of formal education has been an important part of the focus of ALPFA. Adding student chapters to the fabric of the organization was a leap forward to helping ensure the success of Latinos in their post-secondary education as well as earlier in their careers.
In accordance with ALPFA’s by-laws, and to ensure that student members' interests and concerns receive even greater consideration, we are happy to announce that the Board of Directors selected Josuel Plasencia as its Student Member Director at the May 13 meeting.
Plasencia will serve on the ALPFA Board of Directors throughout the remainder of 2016. We look forward to Josuel's contributions and welcome him warmly to ALPFA’s Board.
Josuel Plasencia is a 21-year old social entrepreneur, youth advocate and community leader who has been featured on NBC, ABC, PBS, C-SPAN and in the Wall St. Journal. Josuel brought his passion to the #1 school for entrepreneurship in the United States (U.S. News and World Report), Babson College. There he co-founded Project 99, a startup focused on inclusive entrepreneurship, which piloted its first program in August 2015 in the Dominican Republic. Project 99's brought together 20 students for 4 days, sponsored and made possible by Delta Airlines, Deloitte Dominican Republic, Grupo Rica, Grupo Corripio, the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, ALPFA and the Clinton Global Initiative. Josuel currently sits on the Alumni Leadership Council of the National Academy Foundation, an organization that turned the course of his life around in high school. He is also a public speaker (Gotham Hall, The Museum of Finance, Rooftop at Tribeca and Cipriani Wall Street), focusing on the impact non-profit programs have on a young person’s life, such as ALPFA, Junior Achievement, the National Academy Foundation and Virtual Enterprises International had in him.
Being raised by a single mother, in a family where he is the first high school graduate is representation of what has fueled much of his life's desires. With distinguished honors like being selected Junior Achievement Student of the Year, Mentee of the Year in New York City and ALPFA's Student of the Year (even ringing the bell at the New York Stock Exchange), Josuel accredits his entrepreneurial experience as being instrumental in unlocking his potential. Josuel has previously interned with Goldman Sachs, KPMG United Nations Desk, EY and BNY Mellon. During the summer of 2016, he will be a Consulting Summer Analyst at Accenture. He recently participated in the Babson BRIC: Cornerstone of The New Global Economy Program, studying abroad in China, Russia and India during his first semester as a junior.
Congratulations on becoming a Board Member of the ALPFA, Josuel! ALPFA is a tremendous organization. I am glad to see another Babson fellow shine like a rock star and give back to the Latino community.
